Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 18, 2026
This policy covers the Reddit Jail browser extension and this website (together, "Reddit Jail," "we," "us"). It describes what we collect, why, and what you can do about it. It doesn't apply to Reddit itself, Google, or any other third-party service we link to or authenticate through: their own privacy policies govern those.
What we collect
Account information (via Google Sign-In)
Reddit Jail uses Google Sign-In for authentication, requesting the openid, email,
and profile scopes. That gives us your Google account's stable ID, email address, and basic
profile info (name, avatar). We use this solely to create and authenticate your Reddit Jail account. We
don't post as you, read your Gmail, or touch anything else in your Google account.
Your display handle
After signing in, you choose a public display handle. That handle (not your email or Google name) is what other users see on your comments and votes. It is intentionally disconnected from any Reddit account you may have; we don't ask for, collect, or store your Reddit username.
Content you submit
Comments, replies, votes, reports you file, and anything you add to your profile (like a bio) are stored so the service can function: that's the product.
Abuse-prevention data
To throttle spam and detect ban evasion, we record a hash of your IP address and a hash of a device fingerprint at sign-in. These are cryptographic (HMAC-SHA256) hashes, not the raw IP address or device identifier: we don't retain the plaintext values, and the hashes can't be reversed back into your original IP or device ID. If your account is suspended, we may also record the same hashes against that suspension record so we can recognize an attempt to sign up again to evade it.
Moderation records
If content you posted is removed or your account is actioned, we keep a record of what happened and why (the reason a moderator gave), so that enforcement is auditable rather than silent.
What we don't do
- We don't sell your personal information, to anyone, ever.
- We don't share your data with data brokers or use it for advertising profiling.
- We don't use your data to determine creditworthiness or eligibility for lending.
- We don't read or collect anything from your actual Reddit account. Reddit Jail has no access to it.
How we use what we collect
To operate your account and the comment threads, to authenticate you, to prevent spam and ban evasion, to enforce our Community Guidelines, and to respond to valid legal requests (for example, a subpoena) when we're required to by law.
Data retention and deletion
We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. We don't currently have a self-serve "delete my account" button in the product. To request deletion of your account and associated data, email privacy@redditjail.com from the address associated with your account (or tell us your display handle) and we'll process it by hand. Hashed abuse-prevention identifiers tied to an active suspension may be retained after account deletion specifically to keep enforcing that suspension.
Your privacy rights
Reddit Jail is operated out of Ontario, Canada, so Canadian federal privacy law (PIPEDA) is our baseline: you can ask what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, and file a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada if you're not satisfied with how we've handled a request. If you're a California resident, we extend the same access, deletion, and correction rights to you under the CCPA; we don't sell personal information, so there's nothing to opt out of on that front. Send any of these requests to privacy@redditjail.com and we'll respond within a reasonable time.
Cookies and analytics
The extension uses your browser's local/session storage to remember basic UI state (like whether a panel is open). This website does not currently run third-party advertising trackers. If we add privacy-respecting analytics in the future, we'll update this policy first.
Children's privacy
Reddit Jail is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes materially, we'll update the "Last updated" date above and, for significant changes, note it prominently on this page.
